    If you're someone who loves waterfalls, quiet moments, and scenic drives through the countryside, then Thirparappu Waterfalls should definitely be on your travel list. Nestled in the southern tip of Tamil Nadu, this beautiful cascade is not only photogenic but also filled with that calm, local charm that instantly makes you feel at home.

I visited Thirparappu Waterfalls recently on a weekend trip from Nagercoil, and it turned out to be one of the most peaceful and refreshing getaways I’ve had in a long time. Here's everything you should know, from travel tips to personal experiences, to help plan your own visit.

Where is Thirparappu Waterfalls Located?

Thirparappu Waterfalls is located in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, around 55 km from Kanyakumari and 15 km from Nagercoil. It’s easily reachable by car, and the drive is just beautiful – green paddy fields, coconut trees, and small village houses make the journey feel very special.

You’ll pass through little towns like Kulasekharam and Marthandam, which are known for their greenery and peaceful vibes.

The Waterfall Experience: Cold, Clean, and Relaxing

The waterfall is about 50 feet high and flows down in layers over black rocks. The water here is very clean and fresh, and what I loved most is how cool it felt even on a hot day. There’s a designated area for bathing, with steps and safety rails – so it’s great for families and kids too.

I spent nearly 40 minutes just standing under the fall, letting the strong current hit my back like a free natural massage. It’s a wonderful feeling, believe me!

Don’t Miss the Mahadevar Temple Next Door

Right next to the waterfall, there’s a beautiful Shiva temple, known locally as the Mahadevar Temple. It’s one of the 12 famous Shiva temples in this region. The architecture is traditional with lovely carvings, and the temple is always cool inside.

I took a few quiet minutes here after bathing in the falls – and honestly, the peaceful temple environment added a nice spiritual touch to the whole trip.

Boating at the Nearby Dam and Park Area

Just a short walk from the falls is a boating area with pedal boats, surrounded by small gardens and a children’s play area. The dam nearby looks beautiful during sunset. We rented a boat and paddled slowly while soaking in the green view.

If you’re visiting with family, especially kids, this boating spot is a must-try.

Lush Green Surroundings – A Photographer’s Dream

The greenery around Thirparappu is simply magical. There are banana plantations, tall coconut trees, and even some rare birds if you look closely. I saw a couple of kingfishers near the rocks.

If you’re into photography, carry your camera – morning and evening light are perfect for wide landscape shots and close-up nature clicks.

Local Food and Snacks You Must Try

There are small roadside stalls and local shops near the entrance selling hot vadas, bajjis, tea, and local meals. After a splash in the water, nothing beats a hot cup of tea and crispy banana bajji.

One shop near the temple served a simple but tasty meals plate with rice, sambar, kootu, and pickle – very homely and satisfying.

Best Time to Visit Thirparappu Waterfalls

The best time to visit is during or just after the monsoon season (June to December). The waterfall will be full, and the greenery around will be bright and alive. But it’s open throughout the year, and even during summer, it doesn’t dry up completely.

We went in November – the water flow was strong, and the cool breeze was perfect.

What to Carry and Tips for Visitors

Here are a few things I personally found useful:

• Carry a towel and spare clothes if you plan to get wet
• Water shoes or slippers (the rocks can be slippery)
• Sunscreen and a small cap
• A plastic bag for wet clothes
• Keep some cash – no online payment options for food stalls

There are paid changing rooms near the fall, and basic toilets are available.

How to Reach and Where to Stay

If you're coming from Trivandrum or Nagercoil, the best option is to hire a cab or drive your own vehicle. The roads are well-maintained. There are regular buses too, but the frequency is low and less convenient.

If you want to stay overnight, check out hotels in Nagercoil or Kuzhithurai. There aren’t big resorts near the falls, but you can easily find decent budget stays nearby.

Why Thirparappu Waterfalls Felt Special to Me

It wasn’t just the waterfall or the temple that made this trip memorable. It was the simple, untouched beauty of the place. The people were kind, the surroundings were clean, and the entire experience felt like something out of a simpler time.

Unlike commercial tourist spots, Thirparappu has soul. It’s not noisy or overcrowded, and it welcomes you with a peaceful kind of warmth. I came back refreshed, with a calm mind and a phone full of beautiful pictures.
